I’d like to the newsletter off by welcoming folks who signed up for my newsletter at Rose City Comic Con. Since that was a few weeks ago, here is a refresher about what I do.
- The City Between is my webcomic about werewolves in the future. It updates Wednesdays. The current story is titled Glass Diamonds. It is free to read on my website, or you can follow my patreon to get it emailed to you.
- Blue Moon is a werewolf romance graphic novel I’m writing and Meredith McClaren is going to draw.
- Cautionary Fables and Fairytales is a kid-friendly folklore anthology series I edit and organize for Iron Circus Comics. Each volume focuses on a different continent.
- Sorcery 101 is my old webcomic. It is finished and is about an inept sorcerer learning magic from a grumpy vampire.
I have two day jobs. One is as an editor for Seven Seas, so I’ll occasionally share manga I’m editing for them. I’m also the managing editor at Iron Circus Comics. I like folklore, fantasy, and especially like werewolves.
On my Patreon, I’m going to start a graphic novel book club. I posted a poll asking people where they want to start. Finder, Concrete, and Witch Hat Atelier all tied. Concrete is the shortest so we will start with that one. I’ve posted a poll to pick a meet up time to talk about it.
On Saturdays at 11 am PST, I usually watch a movie in my discord. This month I’m showing off my favorite werewolf movies. Anyone can pop in and watch along. This month we are watching:

In 2014, I drew a series called Misfits of Avalon. It is about magical girls that are jerks fighting a reincarnated King Arthur. The first volume has been out of print for a bit, but I recently got the rights back. So while it was print only for awhile, I’ve now put it back up on my website. If you haven’t read it yet, here is a link. I’ll probably kickstarter an omnibus in a few years (next Kickstarter will be for Glass Diamonds – the next City Between book).
I’ve been editing an anthology for Iron Circus Comics called Lie Machine. It is about propaganda, fake news, and stories get twisted. The cover is by Nick Dragotta and all the final pages were due this month. So a lot of my time in September has been helping folks get over the finish line. I’ll have more details next month when details are more public. But it is shaping up well. I’m looking forward to people seeing it.
I’m also doing a comic for Lie Machine. Glass Diamonds has 5 pages left to be posted on my patreon for the patron who get to read pages early. And I’m only half way done with the script for the next City Between story. So I’ll be posting pages for my Lie Machine story. It is called Look Upon My Works and Don’t Think About Me At All. It is about quotes taken out of context to mean something else over time. It is partly inspired by a popular Mad Men meme that is always used to mean the opposite of the scene in context. This one:
So that will be on my Patreon during November and Decemeber. Afterward I’ll either start the next City Between story or work on a horror short comic I was hired to draw. It is gonna depend on if the script is done.
Though on topic of propaganda, one of my favorite youtubers Skip Intro posted a new video this month about how the show 24 normalized torture. It digs into how it helped right wing narratives to justify the War on Terror. It’s a really good video. I especially like when he digs into who every study we have shows torture doesn’t work and that it would especially not work in a 24/ticking clock situation. But 24 was used by multiple goverment officials as examples of why we should use torture.
This month’s discord movie hangs were in dedication to actors who died. We watched Rocky Horror Picture Show and Phantom of the Paradise. both I hadn’t seen before, though I had heard most of the music for Rocky Horror. All I knew about Phantom of the Paradise is people talking about it influencing Berserk, because well that helmet is very unique.
Now that I have finally seen Rocky Horror Picture Show, Tim Curry is the main reason to see it. The rest of the movie fell a bit flat for me because the plot was a bit thin. So friends told me that the interactive performances of Rocky Horror are were it really shines. But those sound 100% not my thing. So I understand why other people love this movie, it is pretty firmly not for me.
Phantom of the Paradise on the other hand was more my speed. It was equally weird and over the top, but had more of a narrative. Garrit Graham was amazing as Beef. I can see why Phantom of the Paradise made an impression on the people. Most of the people I know that have seen it love it. And it has got some pretty amazing camp.
The rest of my time this month has been rereading the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire. A new book is coming out the day I’m sending this newsletter out and I like to refresh myself before picking up the new book each year. One thing I really appreciate about Seanan’s writing is how she can make the reader sympathize with someone was a villain when introduced. Like Raysel is unhinged and vicious in the first book, but in the newest book I’m looking forward into her recovery and growth as person (the new book is supposed to have her partly spotlighted). I’m also thinking about using this series to get better at cover design. But I won’t start to seriously consider it until next year.
