Sorcery 101 page 1407 is up.
And that’s all! Thank you for reading. Sorcery 101 is done after working on it for 11 years.
Misfits of Avalon starts updating again January 23rd. I’m gonna take a few months off of posting comics to update and fix up the site. If there are any sites you like the look of feel free to share them in the comments. I’ll post some sketches and make some blog posts during the break. If you want to keep up to date with what I’m doing please sign up for my mailing list.
Also I’m restructuring the site and my patreon so please read and respond to this post.
So this might be a dumb question but I never really interacted with the site before So I don’t know if there is an online community here or not but what about actual closure for the series and characters?
Wow, that’s the end?
Wow…I’ve loved the comic since I discovered it, but I did not see the end coming. It feels so abrupt…and this is the second webcomic I’ve read that this has happened to in the last month or so. I won’t begrudge the need to end it and will come back to re-read the archives as long as they are around, though
Yeah, okay. So, maybe I missed something as I don’t really read blog updates. I’ve been a reader for 4 years and maybe there’s something I missed? Is this really the end you anticipated from the get-go? Or is that an end that is there because this project doesn’t interest you, anymore? Genuinely curious, nothing against that. I would simply like to know.
It was the ending I always planned. There was some stuff that did get cut BUT that was mostly about secondary characters (like Connor and Jeff stuff) and I felt it distracted from and wasn’t important to Danny’s story.
I admit I feel pretty confused, as well. I’ve been following this comic for several years and I feel like there are a lot of things that were left loose– will there be another comic series in this universe that will continue the story from another perspective (like with how As We Were and Strange Someone tied in to this story)? Or is this the END end?
Thank you for this emotional roller coaster. It’s been a wild ride, and I’m glad I came back before the end (though I do wish I hadn’t left for four years due to my weird issues of avoiding things I like for reasons that sound stupid when I type them out). Despite the ending (Brad’s death will be painful forever, and I’m still torn between anger, sadness, and amusement regarding your link to page eight), I really enjoyed it.
I feel I should probably be more depressed about this ending, but I kinda figured things weren’t gonna end happily a little while ago (though I will admit to hoping I was wrong), so it’s…not quite as painful as it would be otherwise, even if that is one hell of a depressing final shot. Just…the complete opposite of that initial page. Nice touch with that, btw.
I’mma headcanon that things get better eventually. Not perfect, of course, but…better.
And now that the comic is over, I have a question about something I noticed in Strange Someone when I reread it recently: Connor mentioned Kayla and her “stiff of a boyfriend.”
Is the boyfriend Pat? Because I’ve been quietly shipping them since Chapter 35, and it’d be nice to know that things worked out okay for him. As I’ve mentioned on Patreon, I’ve grown attached to him, and I’d like to know if he became less allergic to happiness.
Again, thank you for sharing your worlds and your characters with us. I’ll be looking forward to Misfits of Avalon.
To be honest, this ending has me stumped. I was just thinking things got interesting, with a plot developing because, as Mr Tamura put it: “It is too convenient for Mr. Gunn to suddenly be brought to the attention of Lucy’s superiors […]” on panel 1396. 10 panels later it’s over. Although I can imagine that after 11 years and a partial rewrite you had enough of Sorcery 101, a proper ending would be nice…
Well that escalated quickly.
I appreciate your dedication to this comic, I’ve been reading it for many years. I’d like to say I’m sorry to see it end, but the last few months were so disjointed I lost my way. I can follow the plot, but it feels like the story lost any depth and simple endings in a supernatural world feel fake. Again, I am glad there are artists out there like you that have the vision to publish a webcomic with great characters and lore. Thanks for the ride!
I don’t think I’ve ever commented before, but this ending is prompting it. How is this the end?? There are so many questions left unanswered. So many characters with loose ends and uncompleted arcs. Most of all Danny, himself. What happens to him? Where is he headed?
This just can’t be the end. 🙁
Ummm what? It ended like that?
‘Maybe we can have a happy ending?’ ‘Alpha Phoenix says NOPE’
Well that’s.
That’s seriously tremendously disappointing.
Very odd place to end the story. Pretty much everything is left wide open with every character except the one that died.
Thanks for all your hard work – I enjoyed the show. A whole lot of danged fine stuff over the years.
I have really enjoyed your stories over the years and look forward to many more in the future. But I have to jump on the bandwagon and say the ending was unsatisfying, there is no conclusion to anyone’s story arc. It really feels like this should be building up to the end or leading into a sequel rather than THE END.
I hope your plans are to return to Danny’s story in the future. I don’t want a shoehorned happy ending where everything turns out alright but I would like something definitive.
Oh. Wow. I’ve been following this comic for years. Nearly the entirety of its run, so roughly a decade. I’m really sad to see it end so abruptly with so much unanswered, and so many new threads picked up and then just as quickly dropped. I really appreciate the work you’ve put into this, but I wish we’d got a more satisfying ending.
Please tell me you’re beginning a sequel comic, jumping forward in time to when the dark lady returns to collect on her bargain, or something? This just can’t be it.
“The end.”
WHAT- BUT-NO-I
I just started reading like two weeks ago 🙁
Thank you for a wonderful story. I’ll have to make sure to check back in the future to see what’s going on
Wow… Loved the whole story, but did not see that end coming. Will there ever be a reveal as to why Seth had Danny learning sorcery in the first place? Or why he wanted to have the prince as a servant?
I just feel like some of the fundamental questions introduced at the story’s beginning were left unanswered. : (
Seth had Danny learning sorcery because: He’s not a full fledged spellcaster and didn’t know enough to avoid getting blood bonded. And any direct enough magical control would take away Danny’s ability to actually do spellcasting. So he found a guy just getting started suckered him into it.
While I love this story and the comic, this ending left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Perhaps I’ll feel differently if I come back and read it again later, but it just felt so abrupt.
Wow. I really did not expect it to end here. I still have so many questions and wow. I think I spent the past hour flipping between the very first page of sorcery101 and the very last. I’m impressed. I really want there to be more, but there’s not, and that’s intentional. I don’t know what else to say. I hope that there will be more side-stories in the future. This is the very first webcomic I ever started reading, probably 6 or 7 years ago, and wow. It’s over. I think my brain is in shock.
You know, I can enjoy sad endings or abrupt endings that leave things open. I’m a big, big fan of Alan Ball works like 6 Feet Under and American Beauty and Game of Thrones is my current guilty pleasure. I’ve even own a copy of Grave of Fireflies (only watched it twice). But something about this feels incomplete.
I sense that either there was more to the story that was cut (with Kell thinking/hoping we would still get it) or maybe a need to walk away from it. I’ve been there as an artist.
But it’s is kind of hard for us considering many we’ve become attached to all these characters and story for so long.
At some point in the near future (in a month or two), can we please have some sort of epilogue? An update a year or two in the future of Sorcery 101? It bet some of us would be happy to contribute $ for it (I would at least). It’d be nice if it could be open to the public though.
been reading for at least ten years. This may have even been my first webcomic. So yeah, its gonna be wierd not having Sorcery 101 on mondays.
Cant really say I liked the ending. Seemed rushed. Forced even, Brads death especially, thought a werewolf could survive almost anything. but my disapontment is probally just be cause I never really figured it would end.
Been fun, I will keep an eye out for your future work.
Thank you
Great final page – I love the mirroring of the opening page, even if flipping back and forth between happy Danny and sad Danny really did a number on me. Danny Gunn’s just one of those characters that really affects you – seeing him happy makes me smile, seeing him sad or distressed tugs at my heartstrings.
Will the side characters feature in more stories? I’d love to see more of Connor and Jeff, and I’m dying to know exactly where Jordan comes in. I know Danny mentioned a gay brother, but that’d have to be one heck of an age difference. I’m currently leaning toward Strange Someone taking place in the far future, and Jordan being Danny’s son. Mostly because that would mean Danny’s healed enough to start over and raise a new family.
It seems like you really wanted to wrap up Sorcery 101 and move on to other projects, and I get that, but if you write more stories in this universe I think we’d all love to see glimpses of how these characters turned out, even if they’re not the main focus of the story.
I really loved Sorcery 101. Thanks for making it.
Kitterograph, for the foreseeable future The City Between books are gonna be the closes you get to more Sorcery 101. They are tonally similar and I reuse some of the same characters and some of the mystical world building. However, they aren’t tied to Sorcery 101 cause I wanted better world building on the mundane side of things. I’ll write about that more after I finish the writer notes looking back on each individual chapter.
Thanks you for reading Sorcery 101 and I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was the first comic I ever made. 🙂
Just came back to check out the webcomic since I had not read it in a few years. I wanted to see where you you went with those characters.
I have to echo a lot of people. I don’t hate the ending, but it feels abrupt. Your set up feels like more of prelude to a time skip or point of view change than conclusion. I was in such disbelief and eager to learn more about the characters that I felt compelled to figure out what happened. To see if the world continued in another of your comics.
I am probably not your target audience (person who takes months or years between visits), but it would be nice to have a “wrap up” entry like I see with a lot of finished webcomics. Something that tells a reader that the story arch has really and truly ended and where they can can go for more of the stories set in the world or where to find your newest unrelated story and what it is about. I really had to dig to find your final blog post on this subject and still did not get all my questions answered.
Best of luck with your future projects and thanks for your great webcomic.
Rocks fall. Everyone dies. 😛
Really enjoyed this series over the years, but man, that’s an abrupt and minimal ending.
Hope Danny at least got to write a letter to Natalie to be “found” in his effects waiting to be mailed. Or maybe a book with an inscription or something.
(Thanks for putting all this out into the world though, and making me care enough to be bothered 🙂 )
