Here is another batch of writer notes on Sorcery 101. If you want to read ahead on these got ahead on these head over to my patreon.
Title page
So I wanted to have a goofy looking title page for the first part. I figured Danny getting dragged a long by Chelsey would make it clear about how well their date would go.
page 825 – 831
This scene with Ally being the one to suggest here and Danny go out is mostly to make it clear Danny and Ally are friends. I figure its always obvious that Danny and Brad are friends. But Danny and Ally don’t get many scenes alone together.
The goes for them at the bar. Also, Ally 100% does not want Danny and Trish dating. This outing is not just about cheering him up but also trying to direct his romanctic attentions at not Trish.
page 832 – 841
This whole chapter is an exercise in how to right an absolutely terrible date where Danny is an ass. Everything is awkard and terrible. I tried to have fun with the panel layouts while doing so.
page 842 – 845
Since Danny was such an ass during the date I wanted to make sure he apolgized. Then it leads to the line that is basically the point of this part of the chapter. It gives Danny a little bit of an extra push toward Trish.
Title page
Then this title page is to completely contrast the other half. Since story wise this half is more serious and drama based.
page 846 – 851
Danny always does the cooking for everyone in the house. Ally’s reaction to Trish’s phone call is I wanted to make it clear that this is something Ally has been through multiple times.
page 852 – 856
Seth and Tommy orders dinner. Pizza for Tommy and pizza guy for Seth. I always loves how much of a mess Seth’s place is. I had putting a few easter eggs in the mess. Like the tipped over lap and coat on combine to make The One Electronic from Evan Dahm’s Riceboy.
When Seth lets Danny in I decided on the same straight on full body shot so that it was easy to see how well Seth dodged Danny. And it’s just as easy for Seth to throw him out in the snow. This scene where Danny yells at Seth is also in As We Were when Suzanna and Lope cast the spell to find Seth. And Seth waits for his neighbor to go inside and all his text is small so it’s clear he is speaking softly. Also, you can see see Danny’s breath in the whole scene until Seth starts choking him. And because Seth knows how to choke someone Danny can’t talk for the whole scene. After Seth drops Danny I wanted us to always be looking up at Seth and down at Danny to push their power dynamic.
page 857 – 864
Ally’s advice is a line I indeed to be really sad for anyone that rereads the story. Trish literally can’t remember Seth being cruel to her. Frost never lets her.
This scene I wanted to focus on Danny trying to cheer Trish up, rather than him immedately trying to put the moves on her. But I thought this would be a good place for him to open up about his divorce. And because I like to show people injuries, I made sure Seth’s choking secession left marks. Also, every shot from “He’s an ass.” onward is reused later when Seth seduces Trish later.
